Global changes to SSL lifespans are beginning March of next year. These changes impact the time a certificate can remain valid before it is reissued in an effort to bolster security across the entire industry. These changes are set to alter the way SSL’s are provisioned and interacted with for everyone, as new solutions emerge we encourage anyone interested in the future of SSL products to weigh in via our Survey below.
Why are these changes being made?
In April 2025, the Certificate Authority/Browser Forum came to the agreement to reduce the lifespan of all certificates between issuing in an effort to improve security. The gradual shift to lower lifespans aims to cycle certificates more frequently lowering their risk of compromise.
Who do they impact?
These changes impact everyone and will impact and adjust the lifespan of every certificate type and provider. As such Synergy Wholesale will be providing 200 day validity certificates (for one year total terms) as of March 15, 2026, the date of the first incremental decrease.
Existing Certificates
Existing certificates ordered prior to March 15, 2026 will retain their full purchased lifespans; however certificates ordered after March 15 2026 will be beholden to the lowered 200 day lifespan before requiring a reissue. Once reissued the remaining days for the yearly purchase term will activate before the SSL finally expires. Our existing AutoSSL implementation on all Shared hosting services will not be impacted by this change as the certificates are already set to reissue prior to the new 200 day requirements.
Where to from here?
These changes are still being addressed by many major suppliers and the exact structure of these new solutions is to be announced. Some solutions are likely to involve subscription based certificates or adjustments to the renewal processes. As we investigate these solutions we wanted to take this opportunity to better understand how you use SSL products so we can determine the best solution for our Partners during these changes.
